Career Highlights
My career so far as a Freelance Artist has been
varied, exciting and rewarding.
I graduated in 2008 from De Montfort University with a
degree in Drama and there isn't a day that goes by when I don't refer
back to my education and training.
I have had the pleasure to work for some wonderful
companies over the past twelve months, which include Speakeasy Theatre
Company and Non Stop Cabaret Theatre Company. With Non Stop Cabaret I
toured to different theatres across the country with a production of
Faustus playing Wagner, Evil Angel, Pope and The Old
Man- where versatility was very much required! Faustus
also received a nomination for Best Production at the Buxton Fringe
Festival, which is a career highlight for me! I have also performed
in two, durational Live Art performances, the first four hours long and
the second six!
Alongside my acting and performance work, I have had
great experiences working as a Drama Workshop Leader, teaching ages
ranging from 8-18 years old and there is nothing more satisfying or
rewarding than when you are teaching a difficult group and then at the
end of the term they produce a wonderful piece of theatre.
Speakeasy Highlights
I initially started working with Speakeasy as a
volunteer and then as a self employed freelancer on their weekly
Dramarama sessions (which I am proud to say I still do, every Monday at
the Y Theatre). This was an invaluable learning curve for me because I
didn't have an awful lot of teaching experience and Bob Christer taught
me a lot in my first term. For example, how to communicate with the
children and how to encourage them to do well and to learn in a creative
and fun way.
Another major highlight for me was working with
Speakeasy on their Sabanrab project. I took the role of a peasant who
had stolen some apples and the children then had to decide whether or
not I should hand myself in. It was surprising to me just how much the
children absorbed, they really believed in the situation and the
consequences that should follow after stealing. This project was great
for me as it combined two things, acting and teaching. I really enjoyed
being able to play the peasant, and to have an influence over the
children's learning and thinking. I hope to do more projects like this
in the future with Speakeasy.
